Calculating averages and preparing report cards without mistakes

At the end of every term, teachers spend hours calculating averages and filling in report cards. A single calculation error can change an honour or skew a ranking.

The subject average

Add up the grades for the subject, then divide by the number of grades. If some assessments count more (an exam versus a quiz), weight them before dividing.

The overall average with coefficients

Multiply each subject average by its coefficient, add the results, then divide by the sum of the coefficients. Example: 12 in French (coef. 4) and 15 in English (coef. 2) give (48 + 30) ÷ 6 = 13.

Honours

Honour roll, encouragement, congratulations: each school sets its own thresholds. Write them down once so they apply the same way to every student.

The most common mistakes

• Forgetting a coefficient or using the wrong one.
• Rounding too early, before the overall average.
• Copying a grade onto the wrong student.
